Canada Releases OTC and Prescription Drug Labeling Regulations

August 11, 2016

Health Canada has released Plain Language Labelling (PLL) Regulations which provide guidelines for making prescription and non-prescription labels easier to read and understand in order to improve the safe use by consumers.

The regulation specifies the following:

  • Standardized drug facts tables on the outer labels of non-prescription drugs, similar to the nutrition facts tables on food products
  • Recommended dosage and contact information for where to call if someone has questions or adverse reactions to a medication

The new regulation shall enter into force on June 13, 2017 for new products while existing products will have until June 30, 2021 to comply.
